How Long Since I've Run

Ugh -- went to the gym today for a first combo ride, run, row. Only a combined time of less that 45 minutes, but yikes. This is gonna be a long road to climb re: getting my fitnesse more rounded. Gotta start somewhere and that's what today was all about.

Urgh

Back on the Bike

Finally getting back on the bike:

- Tuesday: a first get acquainted ride after the horrendous Europe travel. Just up tunnel road and along the Oakland ridge before dropping back down and by the shop
- Wednesday: rest
- Thursday: Road ride up Tunnel, down Pinehurst and back up Wildcat -- the standard route
- Friday: 3 hours with Brent on the MTBs around Mt Tam. 5000' of climbing with some good grunts. Finished just as darkness closed in. Found some good new (illegal) single track. Mountain Home, the Ranger Station, Muir Beach, and Coyote Ridge
- Saturday: 4 hours with the boyz (and Reeta) on Nicasio. Got a bit chewed up as Jun was feeling frisky and made us suffer a bit
- Sunday: Hualed Sasha and all her gear to the Berkeley kite festival. More of a workout than one would think!

Home With the Folks

I detoured to Orange CT to visit the folks as my passport got held up and left me stranded in NYC. Had some of my mom's yummy batter bread. Orange looks the same as it did in 1996, 1986, 1976, and 1966 for that matter. Wow. Rested now after a long tiring day with Citibank in NYC.

Issued!

BuildingPermitSign
Originally uploaded by Greg Kidd.
Finally, after some many years of work and maneuver, we have received a building permit. With any luck, this will turn out to be one hell of a "storage addition" as it will include 2 stairwells, 4000 square feet of decking over three levels, a breezway, carport with capacity for 4 vehicles and mudroom.

My hope is that we'll pull some of this together for the winter.....!

Lotsa News

Well, after being in the trenches forever, two big forward movements. First and foremost, we have finally been issued a proper building permit for the studio/deck extension on the Barrel. Whew! I'll meet with the building team to see how this is all going to get budgeted for time and money. I hope (perhaps vainly) to have this in place by the winter so that I have somewhere I can ride to on the occassional day to supplement my training.

Also, the paperwork came buy for my dad to buy the cottage -- thus freeing up construction funds for the Barrel. This has been part of a long tax free exchange that involved selling an old condo from my grad school days at Yale, and reinvesting those funds out here. What a headache, but unless you jump through all the hoops, the tax man comes and makes your life miserable.

My Moots has been sold (boo hoo) for $1225 = $50 for shipping. Heck, I only paid $1500 for it two years ago. Hooray for eBay. An old computer has also gone and now I've got a slick replacement iBook and a free Nano. The Apple stuff just keeps getting better and better. Really solid now.

I'm going to sign up to do an adventure race on August 27th -- yikes. Gotta find me a kayak.

Have also bought tickets to India for the fam on December 23rd. Dunno how long work will let me stay over, but their tickets are until the 27th of January -- 5 weeks.

Pete and Emily and Zoe have left for Sri Lanka. Hope to visit them when I head to Inida. Pete Casteli (and also Pete Gilbert) are candidates for a Manali - Leh trek over the two highest mountain passes in the world in 2008. Another possible trip then is with Homer Luther (whom I've finally tracked down in New Mexico) down to his stomping grounds in Patagonia.

And Pete Gilbert is heading back over to claim his new Trek Fuel. There will be no stopping that lad now -- up or down.

Lots on -- More work likely to come through both locally and from afar. Stay tuned.

Back on the Bike

Finally, am back on the bike. Did the normal Saturday ride leaving from the Golden Gate Bridge at 8.30am. Jun and Allan were not there -- I think this may be Jun's century weekend in Colorado. But Rich, Craig, Reeta, and crew were. As we rolled up Corte Madera, we rolled by Smilie and Julie who were stopped on the side of the road. As Smilie is my coach and I'd like to get back on the program, I switched groups and road with him. He towed us all the way up to Pt Reyes -- and looked pretty flash in his full Navigators kit.

My heartrate was zooming (in the 150s) without much power to show for it. But at least I'm now rested enough and well enough so that I can get the heart rate up. I take that to mean that I'm fully recovered from South Africa and my staph infection.

Selling the Moots now -- tired of chain breaks. Will miss the frame but not the drive chain. Committed to the Trek Fuel now.
